Live Action Role Playing
Your D&D character, but you ARE the controller.
LARP is what happens when tabletop RPGs go full-body. You dress as a character, wield foam weapons, cast 'spells' by throwing beanbags, and navigate storylines written by game masters in real forests and castles. Combat is physical but safe, and the roleplay ranges from casual hack-and-slash to deep political intrigue. It's an MMO you play with your whole body.
How to start
- 1Search for LARP groups near you — Facebook groups and Meetup are good sources.
- 2Attend as a spectator or NPC first. Most groups welcome newcomers this way.
- 3Borrow gear for your first game. Veterans usually have spare swords and tabards.
- 4Create a simple character concept: name, motivation, one personality quirk.
- 5Focus on roleplay first, combat second. The social game is where LARP shines.

Plot twists
Ways to spice this up when the basics get boring.
- Play a villain NPC for a day. Being the bad guy is liberating.
- Craft your own foam weapons. The DIY rabbit hole is deep.
- Try a Nordic LARP — heavy on drama, minimal combat, maximum feels.
- Go to a multi-day camping LARP. Sleep in character. Wake up in character.
- Create an in-game journal your character writes between events.
You're physically moving, socially engaged, and solving problems in character. There's no 'idle' state — the game world keeps moving around you.
The largest LARP event, Conquest of Mythodea in Germany, draws over 9,000 players to a single battlefield for a week-long fantasy war.
