Latte Art

Pour milk angrily into coffee. Somehow a heart appears.

creativecrafty$ low1 hourdifficulty 3/5

Latte art is drawing with steamed milk on espresso. You start with a blob, graduate to a wobbly heart, and eventually make things that look intentional. The learning curve is steep but the practice sessions are delicious, which is the best kind of difficulty curve.

How to start

  1. 1
Make or buy an espresso (or very strong coffee). Pour it into a wide mug.
  2. 2
Heat milk and froth it β€” a French press works if you don't have a steamer.
  3. 3
Tilt your mug 45 degrees. Pour the milk slowly from high up, then bring the pitcher close.
  4. 4
When the mug is 2/3 full, pour faster and wiggle gently for a leaf shape.
  5. 5
Drink your beautiful failure. Make another. Repeat until caffeinated or satisfied.

Plot twists

Ways to spice this up when the basics get boring.

  • Try latte art with hot chocolate instead of espresso.
  • Use a toothpick to draw faces in the foam after pouring.
  • Make latte art for every person in your house. Rate your own consistency.
  • Attempt a tulip before you've mastered a heart. Chaos builds character.
  • Try latte art with oat milk β€” different froth, different challenge.
ADHD notes

Each attempt takes 2 minutes and you drink the evidence. Immediate feedback, built-in reward system, and caffeine.

Fun fact

Competitive latte art is real. The World Latte Art Championship has been running since 2005 and judges score on symmetry, contrast, and creativity.
